Tuesday, April 16, 2002 - The Ministry of Communications and Works on Monday April 16, 2002, awarded a joint contract to Hippolyte Equipment Services Ltd. and Tetram SARL for works on the Hewanorra International Airport Flood Protection project. The project forms part of a wider venture known as the Emergency Recovery and Disaster Management Project, being funded by the Government of St. Lucia and the World Bank.

The contract for the Hewanorra Airport Flood Protection Project has been valued at one million, seven hundred and five thousand, four hundred and thirty five dollars and sixty five cents ($1,705,435.65).

Chief Engineer attached to the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities, Dalton Cenac explains the significance in reducing the incidence of extreme flooding in Vieux-Fort, and the coastal surges at the eastern end of the runway.

“The works will comprise the implementation of flood mitigation measures, which will involve the construction of 16,00 meters of flood beams, and 800 meters of raised embankments.

Among the principle benefits to be derived from this project, is a reduction in loses to the airport infrastructure, which includes the buildings and runway, reduction in losses to the hotel industry and by extension the tourism sector in St. Lucia,” .

The project will also provide intangible benefits to the persons residing in close proximity to the airport who have continued to express undue anxiety over the flooding situation in that area. It is also expected to provide an interim level of protection to the Hewanorra International Airport, whilst the St. Lucia Air and Seaports Authority prepare the long-term development proposals for the airport.

Works on the project is due to commence this month and a completion date has been set for November 2002. Halcrow Group Limited will provide consultancy services during the construction phase of the project.
