OECS Discusses Sub-regional Watershed Management Policy |
Monday February 25, 2002 - Representatives from OECS member countries will be meeting to discuss the development of an OECS Watershed Management Policy Framework. The meeting will be held in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis from February 25th to 27th 2002. The dialogue will inform the translation of the achievements of watershed management projects in OECS member countries into a regional policy that will help to sustain the benefits derived from the programme. During the meeting participants will brainstorm the elements of the proposed watershed management policy framework and determine the way towards the formulation of the policy. Over the past four years, activities in the OECS Watershed Management programme coordinated by the OECS Natural Resources Management Unit (NRMU), have yielded positive results on watersheds and surrounding communities. These impacts have been achieved mainly through localized partnership arrangements between public and private sector agencies. As a result, some of the Member States have already tested and adopted low cost technologies for soil and water conservation. These technologies include the planting of tree crops along river banks, and the use of geo-textile materials. The communities of Talvan in St. Lucia, Mariaqua in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Wingfield Estate in St. Kitts and Nevis are among the success stories of the OECS Watershed Management programme. The OECS Watershed Management Programme is funded by the Caribbean based British Department for International Development (DFID). Contact: Raymond O’Keiffe Comm.
