NTN Signs Copyright Music Agreement with HMS |
Thursday, January 10, 2002 - St. Lucian music artistes who have their work featured on the National Television Network (NTN) will soon be in line to receive royalties. That’s based on a new copyright agreement signed on Wednesday between NTN and the Hewanorra Musical Society (HMS). General Manager of HMS Steve Etienne says the signing of the agreement is of much importance to local artistes. “We must be appreciative that a lot of local music is being used on that network. Performances on the local network will be paid, royalties will be paid to writers and that’s very important. It’s a step in the right direction,” said Etienne. The agreement requires NTN to provide its programme logs to the Society for analysis. Director of Information Services, Embert Charles, says the new agreement demonstrates that the Government Information Service (GIS) and NTN are complying with the island’s copyright laws. According to Charles the agreement “also signifies our commitment to the development of the creative arts in St. Lucia, especially for those who compose and produce music.” He added, “I think it also sets an example for other media agencies in St. Lucia - that we need to collaborate to ensure that both the media, as well as the creative artistes, develop in a manner that both can benefit from an agreement like this.” |
