Wednesday, February 06, 2002 - Over the last few years the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court has embarked upon several initiatives aimed at reforming the justice system in the region. Ongoing education and training for members of the judiciary are important components of the reform process. The Court, through the Judicial Education Institute, will be mounting a four-day orientation programme for newly appointed judges. The exercise, which will be held in St. Lucia from February 24 - 28, will also include members of the existing judiciary.

The Judicial Education Institute’s Executive Officer Alana Simmons says the orientation programme is being arranged in such a manner so as to afford the more experienced judges the opportunity to impart their knowledge and experience to the new appointees.

“The Chief Justice believes that it would be important for the newly appointed judges to be sensitised to the myriad of issues that judges face in delivering justice; and he thought that an orientation programme would be very important in facilitating this,” she said.

The seminar is expected to cover several topics including Judicial Ethics, Supremacy of the Constitution, the Changing Roles of the Judge, Gender Sensitivity, Stress Management, the Role of Registrars in the Court Offices and Information Technology.

The Orientation seminar will be followed by a Telecommunications Law seminar from March 01 - 02.
