Monday, February 25, 2002 - Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony on Thursday, February 21, 2002, issued instructions for bringing into effect a new protocol with respect to the treatment of former Heads of State and Government, and spouses of current and former Heads of State and Government.

In his New Year’s Day Message of 2001, Prime Minister Anthony had announced an initiative in respect of the treatment of former Heads of State and Government who are no longer actively involved in party politics, as well as the spouses of current and former Heads of State and Government. A special committee was established to review the status of former Heads of State and Government and to make recommendations to Cabinet on their treatment.

The Committee comprised one representative of the United Workers Party, Mr. Wilfred St Clair Daniel, one representative from the St Lucia Labour Party, Mr. Tom Walcott, and former Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Victor Girard, as Chairman.

The recommendations of the Committee were considered by Government in March of 2001, with the approved arrangements targeted to come into effect from 22nd February 2002, the 23rd Anniversary of Saint Lucia’s Independence.

Prime Minister Anthony has indicated that he will be writing to former Heads of State and Government, and their Spouses to formally notify them of their entitlements under the new protocol.
