National Cricket Grounds on Schedule |
Thursday, January 24, 2002 - Three months ahead of play on the National Cricket Grounds, officials from the West Indies Cricket Board and the main sponsors of West Indies Cricket - Cable and Wireless - toured the facility to determine its readiness for play in April. Work began in earnest on the Cricket Grounds at the end of May 2001 and to date all the physical structures including the players’ booth and media centre have been erected. The grass for the pitch is currently being laid and parking facilities are being levelled. Jim Rayan, Project Manager for the National Cricket Grounds, has given the assurance that the facility will be ready for the April 26 match between India’s touring team and the West Indies Select 11. That match is being dubbed a ‘trial match’ for the grounds. “We should be ready because at this point in time there is no reason why we shouldn’t be ready . . . everything is going according to plan,” Rayan said. The Permanent Secretary in the Department of Youth and Sport Earnest Hilaire, who led the January 23 tour of the National Cricket Grounds, says he is satisfied with the progress of work and concurs with the Project Manager that the facility will be ready of play come April. “We will try everything humanly possible to finish the project and make St. Lucia proud,’’ Hilaire said. The cricket grounds will host one-day international matches between New Zealand and the West Indies in June. Officials from the West Indies Cricket Board and Cable Wireless were impressed with the progress of work on the grounds during Wednesday’s visit. |
