End of July Completion for National Stadium |
Contact: Roger D. Joseph Friday, June 14, 2002 – The National Stadium currently being built in Vieux Fort will be ready for use by the end of July this year. That’s according to Department of Youth and Sports officials and the contractors for the project who toured the stadium with the media on Thursday. The 50-million-dollar project is being built to international standards for football and track and field events. It includes a football field, a 400 metre synthetic track, electronic scoreboard and replay screen, treatment and warm up rooms for athletes, lighting and seating for eight thousand persons, among its features. Provisions are being made for additional seating to be built later. Permanent Secretary in the Department of Youth and Sports Ernest Hilaire says the stadium is in its final stages of preparation for use in August when St. Lucia will host the Windward Islands Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships. The National Stadium is being funded by the Government of the People Republic of China and the Government of Saint Lucia. It will be the second major piece of sporting infrastructure to be completed this year, the Beausejour Cricket Stadium having been formally opened on June 6 and successfully hosting two international cricket matches on June 8 and 9. |
