Employers and Trade Unionists come in for Praise |
Friday, January 11, 2002 - Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony has been praising local employers and Trade Unionists for the restraint they have been exercising in a declining world economic environment. The world’s major trade power the United States of America is currently experiencing a recession, which has been having a negative impact on the economies of other nations including St. Lucia. The September 11 bombing of the World Trade Center in the USA has compounded the world economic situation. “ I have to give credit to the trade unions because we are going through challenges times, as you know the trade unions have understood, they have been flexible, and equally our employers have understood that this is not a situation to take advantage of unions and workers. Some have tried very hard to make sure that they maintain the existing workforce, and I really have to give credit to them and express thanks to them because there’s willingness to cooperate and to work in this new situation” the Prime Minister told reporters. The Prime Minister is hopping similar consensus will be reflected in efforts to revise Labour Code. “ We cannot borrow principles from other countries when we do not have the resources or the environment to allow those principles to flourish and to have meaning. We have to please the people of St. Lucia, they are our first priority. So I want to build a consensus and I want a document to reflect the shared aspiration and shared hopes of both labour as well as the private sector,” Prime Minister Anthony noted. The Prime Minister is hopping that issues pertaining to the new labour code is settled by the end of the year. |
