Education Officials Express Satisfaction Over 2002 CXC & GCE Results

Thursday, August 22, 2002 - Education officials are expressing satisfaction over what they say is an overall improvement, in the performance of students who sat both the Cambridge (GCE) A’ level and Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) exams this year. With the official results from the May-June examinations having been released, the island’s Minister for Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports Honourable Mario Michel, speaking at a Press Conference on Thursday, August 22, 2002 noted that in terms of the A Level examinations, the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) recorded a 3.27% improvement in its pass rate, with a 75.3% overall pass rate being recorded this year as compared to 72.07% for last year.

The Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School A’ Level Division Minister Michel noted, had also performed very well. “There was a 17.49% improvement in the pass rate this year over last year, so that the pass rate this year for the Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School A’ level section was 76.87% as compared to 59.38% last year. At this stage it is a little too early to identify who the two island scholars for this year would be because we are yet to receive the order of ranking from the Cambridge syndicate,” said Minister Michel.

The island’s overall percentage pass rate at CXC for this year was 72.15%, with 17 out of the 19 secondary schools receiving a percentage pass rate above 50%. The performance of the George Charles Secondary School, which recorded a pass rate of 56.12% Minister Michel indicated, was tremendously encouraging. According to him, “this was a very significant improvement from their 49% pass rate last year, their 43.9% pass rate in the previous year and their 39.7% pass rate in 1999. You can see a pattern whereby this school is really coming out of the shadows and making steady progress. This is a report card that I as Minister feel very encouraged by because it is a school that has had its share of problems in the past but the pattern of their performance shows a clear and distinct improvement in the performance of that school.”

The St. Joseph’s Convent again topped the list at the CXC exams with an overall pass rate of 97.71%. The Leon Hess came in second with 86.11% and the St. Mary’s College was third with 84%.
