Monday, February 18, 2002 - The Ministry of Commerce, Tourism, Investment and Consumer Affairs is fine tuning its programme of activities to mark World Consumer Rights Day on March 15, 2002 under the theme “Voices for Change”.

The highlight of this year’s activity is the launch of the St. Lucia Consumers’ Association. Over the last year the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has been facilitating efforts to have an independent consumer association operating on the island. Director of Consumer Affairs Phillip McClauren says the work of the ministry and the consumer association will complement each other.

“Of course we are not enemies; we see their work complementing that of the Consumer Affairs Department. Government has a responsibility to enact legislation and develop policies to guide consumers, to protect consumers, to protect their welfare and interest. On the other hand there are other things in the market; market imperfections and these things (which) must be brought to light. So we you will find that the NGO groups are better placed to speak out against practices that may be unfair,” McClauren said.

A number of media activities including a discussion on consumer rights will precede the March 15 observance of Consumer Rights Day.
