Puerto Rico, Monday, June 17, 2002 - President of the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association, Berthia Parle has been elected first Vice President of the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA). Mrs. Parle was nominated for the position prior to the CHA’s Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference, CHIC, currently taking place in Puerto Rico. She was confirmed in the position during a meeting of the CHA’s Board of Directors last weekend.

Berthia says she considers this a major milestone in her long career in the hospitality industry. She says it is also an important achievement for St. Lucia and its role in regional tourism circles. Mrs. Parle has been one of the biggest champions of the region’s small hotel sector. Her appointment as CHA’s 1st Vice President is indicative of the fact that more attention is being paid to small hotels in the region. For the first time in the twenty year history of the Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference, a small hotels retreat has been included on the itinerary.

Other members of the CHA’s new executive include: Simon Suarez of the Dominican Republic, President (He replaces Mr. Ralph Taylor who has been CHA’s President for the past two years); Mr. Suarez is the CHA’s first president from the Spanish Speaking Caribbean. Peter Odle, from Barbados, second Vice President; Gabriel Escalante of Mexico 3rd Vice President; Robert Sherman of Antigua 4th Vice President; Richard Dourmeng of St. Thomas USVI 5th Vice President and Jag Metha, Treasurer.

Berthia Parle says she is quite excited about her appointment as 1st Vice President of the CHA and she sees it as a tremendous responsibility as she is the first woman appointed at this level of the organization’s leadership. The SLLHTA plans to use her position as a platform from which to continue advocating the cause of the region’s small hotel sector.
