An Information and Communication Technology Policy for the Region |
Contact: Rose Marie Harris Tuesday, July 09, 2002 – The second in a five part series of workshops aimed at the formation of a regional Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Policy began here in Saint Lucia on Tuesday July 09, 2002. The workshop entitled “Status and Projection of Infrastructure and Network Development in CARIFORUM Countries” will focus on the importance of infrastructure, interconnection, network integration, opportunities and strategies for policy implementation and future market development. Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Communications and Public Utilities, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Techla Augustine, describes the workshop as timely in light of significant changes taking place in the telecommunication sector globally. “We meet at a time when the dynamics within the telecommunication industry are moving at a tremendously rapid rate. The environment is changing as liberalisation and competition are modifying the rules of the game. We must show our commitment to this sector or we will be obliged to become followers. There are changes taking place in which we do not just want to be witnesses but participants in the unique processes taking place worldwide”. The Deputy Permanent Secretary said that this policy was a sign of the region’s determination not to be overtaken by these rapid changes. The workshop is jointly hosted by the Caribbean Telecommunications Union and the Cariforum Technical Assistance Project. |
