2002 National Sports Awards … On This Weekend |
Tuesday, February 12, 2002 - The Department of Youth and Sports in the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports is putting the finishing touches to preparations for this year’s National Sports Awards. The event, which forms part of the programme of activities in celebration of Independence Day, will recognize over thirty persons who have excelled in various sporting disciplines. The National Cultural Centre is the venue for the event, which takes place on Saturday, February 16 under the distinguished patronage of the Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy. According to Marguaerite Deterville, Co-ordinator of the 2002 National Sports Awards, “This year will take on a different format in that in the past we’ve had a guest speaker who would provide inspirational messages to the athletes. This year we will not be graced by the presence of a guest speaker because the focus will be on the achievements of the athletes. The highlight of the evening will be the athletes themselves.” Persons will be recognised in the several sporting disciplines. The nominees have been submitted by national sporting bodies, that have also selected the persons to vie for the prestigious awards for Sports Man and Sports Woman for the year 2001. At Saturday’s Sports Awards special recognition will also be given to the teams that won the Windward Islands Secondary Schools Championships in Grenada last year. Coaches and administrators who have contributed to the development of sports in St. Lucia will also be recognized. |
