Tuesday, February 19, 2002 – Minister for Education, Human Resource Development and Youth and Sports, Honourable Mario Michel, says his ministry will undertake a number of initiatives this year to further develop school sports in St. Lucia. He made the disclosure whilst addressing the National Sports Awards ceremony last Saturday.

The Minister says that the development of school sports is essential adding his Ministry “will continue, in the year 2002, to place even greater emphasis on schools sports convinced as we are that it is the key to unlocking the sporting potential of our youth if their interests and talents can be developed at an early stage.”

Minister Michel indicated that the ministry has introduced a primary school cricket tournament this year to facilitate the early development of young cricketers. “We will also be introducing Table Tennis and female football into the school’s programme this year,” he added.

According to the Minister a number of other sporting initiatives will come to fruition this year and will exceed any of the significant accomplishments in the last five years.

“Not only will we, in the course of this year, implement the national sports policy, not only will we be fully adopting and fully implementing our national policy on school sports and physical education, not only will we be seeking to establish our national sports council this year but more significantly we will be completing, opening and utilizing our national stadium and national cricket ground which will permanently change the sporting landscape of St. Lucia,” said Mr. Michel.

The minister also urged the private sector to support sports development.

The Sports Man of the Year 2001 award went to Darren Sammy and the award for Sports Woman of the year 2001 went to Laverne Spencer. The National Sports Awards is one of several activities to observe St.Lucia’s 23rd Anniversary of Independence.
