Word from the Ministry of Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender
Relations is that the commissioning of a shelter for battered women on the
island will make a significant dent in the number of victims who fall prey to
domestic violence. Health
Minister Honourable Sarah Flood Beaubrun says all the necessary arrangements
have been put in place to ensure that the shelter, which will open its doors on
September 28, 2001, will cater to
the needs of victims in a holistic manner. “We
are satisfied that we have a core of persons who constitute the round table of
the shelter, that they will provide the necessary support and would ensure that
protocols are established, monitored and adhered to. We are also satisfied that
we have a management committee that is going to work to assist in the operations
of the shelter. We have had in the recent past a spate of incidents and you
would remember the family in Soufriere who lost three lives as a result of
domestic violence. Some would say that it is overdue but I believe that it is in
fact timely. We have taken time to adopt a holistic approach to ensure that we
do in fact have a significant impact on the scourge of domestic violence
affecting our country today,” said Flood-Beaubrun. A
team of consultants from Health-Canada is assisting with the setting up of the
shelter. The ministry says that the shelter, which will provide only temporary
accommodation for victims of domestic violence, meets international standards.
The actual location of the shelter is being kept a secret. |
