Tuesday, November 13, 2001 – Do you plan to vote in the forthcoming general election on December 3, 2001 but haven’t registered as yet? The Electoral Department is advising that you have until Wednesday, to get your name on the voters list.

Deputy Elections Officer, Carson Raggie, announcing  November 14, 2001 as the deadline for voter registration, explained this cut-off date is necessary to facilitate an examination of the list by all eligible voters to ensure that no discrepancies exist.

Carson Raggie“After the deadline, even if persons are registered, their names would not appear on the list that would be used for the election because what happens is that,  according to law, the list must be published and a total of 12 days must be allowed for raising claims and objections,” Raggie said.

He added: “Based on the date that the Prime Minister has given for the election, we would have had to calculate so as to allow for 12 days for claims and objections before the list is published and it must be published for it to be used.”

According to the deputy elections chief,  during to the 12 day period if eligible voters can identify any names on the list that for some reason should not have been posted, they can submit an objection claim form that can be obtained from the Electoral Department.   The Electoral Commission will then investigate and make a final determination.

Raggie  appealed to persons eligible to vote but not yet registered to make an effort to do so before the deadline. He emphasized that failure to do so will mean such persons will not be able to vote on December 3.

“If you have never registered before and you come for the first time and you come after the deadline, then you will not be able to vote because your name will not appear on the voters list,” he stressed.
