Peter Friday, September 21, 2001 – A sixty-five (US$65,000,000.00) Million US Dollar agreement was signed signalling the commencement of work on “The Soufriere South Bay Development.” The agreement was signed Thursday September 20, 2001 between the Government of St. Lucia and a St. Lucian company, Donald Monplasir and Co. Ltd which has assembled an investment group, interested in constructing and operating tourism related infrastructure in Soufriere. The
project includes the construction of a marina and quay in the
vicinity of Baron’s drive, a condominium complex and a 120-room hotel. The
project is just one of several approved projects by the Government of St. Lucia
as it continues to facilitate and support the development of the island’s
tourism industry. Prime
Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony during Thursday’s signing said he is quite
pleased with the project, an idea that was conceptualised about four years ago
by Monplasir and Co. Ltd. “This
is a powerful vote of confidence in the future of St. Lucia and the future of
Tourism. And I want to underscore another aspect that is equally important. The
fact that this project successfully brings together several investors including
His Royal Highness Prince Hosam including French investors, this government
never refuses the opportunity to express its pleasure with French investors and
we have very hard to strengthen the bonds of friendships between St. Luca and
France,” he added. Parliamentary
Representative for Soufriere Hon. Dr. Walter François says he is heartened over
the number of jobs that will be generated through this project, which has
received the blessings of residents. “We
have been told on many, many occasions that this area will be developed but we
have never seen a proposal as tangible, as likely to be implemented as this one.
And I think the people of Soufriere will participate and will support the
project whole-heartedly,” said Dr. François. The
Developers have agreed that the project will reflect the architectural history
and tradition of Soufriere, offer a mix of commercial and recreational
amenities, and will diversify and enhance the island’s tourism product. In order for the project to proceed at Coin de L Anse and Malgretoute the developers have proposed to facilitate the relocation of existing residents through various undertakings including the financing and constructing of fifty prefabricated model homes on services lands. |
