A
team from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is expected in Saint Lucia next
month for discussions on financing for a US$8 million water and sewerage sector
enhancement project.
CBD is expected to provide US$4.5 million of the total financing, with US$2.6 million coming from the World Bank and the remainder from the Government of Saint Lucia.
The primary objective of the project is the development of an appropriate institutional and regulatory framework for the water and sewerage sector. This framework is necessary to create the environment for the delivery of safe, reliable and adequate potable water and sewerage services, at an affordable cost, over the next 20 years.
The project also includes implementation of critical capital works to positively impact on the reliability and quality of service in the short term. Other benefits include a reduction in public health risks to the mainly low-income residents and transient population within the central commercial district of Castries by replacing unreliable mechanical and electrical equipment within the sewerage system.
The
project will also improve the water treatment capacity at Grace in Vieux Fort to
provide a more reliable and better quality of potable water particularly during
the rainy season to benefit an estimated 20,000 persons.
