Thursday, 17 May 2001 – Enthusiastic web users in Saint Lucia can now surf the pages of the World-Wide Web without the burden a huge Internet bill.  On Thursday, World Telecommunications Day, Cable and Wireless made good on its promise to provide an unlimited Internet package for heavy web users.  The "Unlimited Dialup Internet Access" is the latest in a series of benefits for local consumers, which have come through a series of negotiations between Cable and Wireless and the Government of Saint Lucia.  For $129.00 a month customers get all the web they can eat.  Please note thought there is an additional access charge of 75 cents per call.

Cable and Wireless Launches Unlimited Dialup InternetSpeaking at the launching ceremony of the new service, Cable and Wireless General Manager, Donald Austin said, “St. Lucia can truly boast to be one of the best serviced developing nations worldwide, and this augurs well for the future.”  He added that this unlimited Internet package would go a long way in “narrowing the digital divide.”

Last year, government appointed an e-commerce working committee to develop short and long term plans to accelerate the use of e-commerce business to promote sustainable economic growth for Saint Lucia.  Mr. Austin believes that this idea as well as the recent launch of the new Government of Saint Lucia Website (http://stlucia.gov.lc) will provide an ideal opportunity for e-Commerce initiatives for local business entrepreneurs and e-Government solutions.

Cable and Wireless hopes that by repackaging its data services that they will be more available to local households.  It is also intended that this will result in a reduction of the number of people making unauthorized use of subscribers’ Internet accounts.
