Discussion
on plans for the development of two new resorts will commence shortly between
the Ministry of Tourism here and the companies involved in the construction and
management of the properties. Last week, the owners announced that construction on the two properties - a 300-room convention hotel to be managed by Marriott and a 150-room luxury boutique hotel to be operated by either Mandarin International of Hong King or Legacy hotels of Canada – should begin before the end of this year. The new properties will adjoin the Hyatt and Rose wood Hotels on the Pigeon Island causeway in Gros Islet. Commenting
on the announcements, Tourism Minister Honourable Menissa Rambally suggested
that the investments demonstrate a high level of investor confidence in Saint
Lucia’s long-term future as a quality tourism destination despite the current
challenges facing tourism within the region. “It
certainly seems positive, based on the press release that was issued last week,
that these two resorts will more than likely be coming on very shortly and we
may see the start of construction before the end of the year as indicated.” The
two properties are expected to operate on the EP plan at five star level and
Miss Rambally thinks that and the addition of internationally renowned hotel
brands such as the Mariott will significantly strengthen the island’s position
in the international tourism market arena.
The
Minister says with Saint Lucia now positioned as a total quality destination,
these proposed development will do much to compliment the tourism package being
offered. |
