September 15, 2001 - Minister of Tourism, Hon. Menissa Rambally has called aHon. Menissa Rambally meeting of all stakeholders in the tourism sector for Tuesday, September 18th, to evaluate and plan for the fall out that is likely to result from recent terrorist attacks in the United States.

Minister Rambally said New York in particular was a major source of tourist business for St. Lucia and the Ministry would first be evaluating the impact of the tragedy on the persons with whom St. Lucia does business. “I have already made contact with several of our associates in the United States, enquiring as to their safety and well-being. This has obviously been a very traumatic experience for industry officials and travelers alike and I would like first and foremost to extend the sympathy, love and concern of the people of St. Lucia to all persons affected, especially those with whom we have done and continue to do business,” Miss. Rambally said.

The Minister hinted, however, that her meeting with local industry officials on Tuesday would not be confined to assessing the immediate and potentially harmful effects of the U.S. tragedy, but also to devising a strategy for securing continued and enhanced tourism business from the vital United States market. “Timing here is the key. Of course we would not wish to commence any hard sell promotion during the current period, but it is crucial that St. Lucia positions itself to take full advantage of the traveling opportunities that will be created by the need for persons in the Tri-State area, in particular, to put this experience behind them,” Miss Rambally said.

The Minister hinted also that Tuesday’s meeting would examine existing security arrangements at the ports of entry in St. Lucia as well as review the enhanced national security plan that was put into effect a few weeks ago, and which, from ongoing analyses, is having a positive impact.
