Friday, February 2, 2001 — Tourism professionals from across the island will gather this Saturday to decide who is the best of the best at the Ste. Lisi Par Excellence Awards Ceremony. Run by the Ministry of Tourism, the St. Lucia Tourist Board and the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association, the annual Ste. Lisi Par Excellence Awards are tourism’s answer to the Oscars, rewarding the very best in St. Lucian tourism from hotels to restaurants; taxi drivers to vendors.

The awards, now in their ninth year, are all about raising standards and improving the quality of St. Lucian tourism by highlighting the many success stories within the tourism industry. Trophies are presented to tourism professionals in over 40 categories in areas such as Accommodations, Services, Transportation, Attractions and Retail. Special awards such as the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Minister’s Award are also given out.

Over the years the Ste. Lisi Par Excellence Awards have been an important force in driving up standards throughout St. Lucia with those people and organizations making it through to the finals all having certain qualities in common — a clear commitment to their customers, a passion for quality and an innovative approach to everything they do.

"When people see one of our winners, they can be sure that they have been tried and tested by some of the most demanding inspectors around," says Director of Tourism Hilary Modeste.

Tourism Minister, the Honourable Menissa Rambally, says the role Ste. Lisi has played in the development of St. Lucia’s hospitality industry cannot be ignored.

"Ste. Lisi Par Excellence is a tangible way of showing appreciation to those who contribute to the growth and success of St. Lucia’s tourism industry and perhaps even more importantly it acts as a tool to motivate people to do their best, so at the end of the day the average worker in the tourism industry can say yes all my hard work is being recognized, I am making a difference."

Always a grand affair, this year’s ceremony is expected to be a very special one.

"This year’s ceremony is definitely going to be a little bit different," says St. Lucia Tourist Board Marketing Manager Tracey Warner-Arnold. "We’ve had the opportunity to work with Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott and his works will form the theme of the show. We also have Andre Tanker from Trinidad as our musical director so the show is really going to be quite spectacular."

In addition to using the works of the St. Lucian Nobel Laureate, another outstanding St. Lucian will play an integral role in tonight’s ceremony. Mr. Joseph Marcell, who hails from Dennery, will host the entire show. A renowned Shakespearean actor both in the US and the UK, Marcel is best known for his role as Geoffrey the Butler in the American comedy Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

The show will be aired live on Radio St. Lucia on February 3rd and rebroadcast in its entirety on Monday February 12th on HTS.
