Monday, March 12, 2001 – The Ministry of Tourism is embarking on a series of educational visits to secondary schools on the island. Today, two tourism officials visited the Clendon Mason Memorial Secondary School in Dennery as part of that exercise. Tourism Education Officer Lyndell Danzie says the objective is to lecture students on the role of the tourism industry in Saint Lucia, tourism policy and careers that exist in the service industry. This awareness campaign is being done in collaboration with the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) and the Ministry of Education.

Danzie notes that the tourism component of the CXC syllabus was first consulted in the planning process to give officials a better idea of some of the issues that they could tap into when speaking to students.

"We would like to start from now to look at their whole perception of the industry and what kind of attitudes and persona are needed for jobs in the industry, or even to assist with the whole tourism development initiative," said Danzie.

The tourism official says despite the fact that in their schools, students might already be familiar with issues pertaining to tourism, interaction with key persons in the industry is vital, if young people are to grasp a true understanding of what takes place within the industry. In this way, Danzie explained, young people can be better advised on choosing a career.

"What we find is that students like to be told exactly what is happening in the industry by the technocrats in the industry. They feel very assured once we have spoken to them."

The Ministry of Tourism began the awareness campaign in schools last year when they visited a number of primary schools. The feedback from that element of the programme has proven to be successful, Danzie reports and the ministry continues to provide its resources to the schools at their request.

The ministry is hoping to extend the exercise to many more schools. They have included technical and vocational schools like the Girls’ Vocational School, the Seventh Day Adventist School and the Centre for Adolescent Rehabilitation and Education (C.A.R.E), for visiting soon.
