Government is pressing ahead with its efforts to expand and improve the
island’s health sector. Residents of Gros Islet will soon have access to
quality health care right in their community when the Gros Islet Polyclinic
becomes operational in May. This polyclinic will provide health services that
traditional community health centres do not offer. The polyclinic is part of the wider process of health sector reform that
seeks to improve and modernise the system and delivery of health care on the
island. The reform has been addressing concerns such as the equity and
efficiency of the health care system in light of the island’s demographic
changes and the public’s demand for better health services.
The concept behind the Gros Islet Polyclinic is to provide a bridge
between community health care and tertiary health care as provided by the
hospitals. The clinic, which has replaced the Gros Islet Health Centre, will
provide a wide range of health services to the community.
Consequently, the Ministry of Health is in the process of identifying and
hiring qualified health care professionals to staff the polyclinic and has
advertised a number of available positions such as, an administrator, a district
medical officer, an obstetrician/gynaecologist, a medical laboratory assistant,
an emergency medical technician and a medical radiographer. |
