Friday, August 31, 2001 -  The Department of Cooperatives will soon be releasing a comprehensive status report on the cooperative movement in Saint Lucia. It will highlight, among other things, the contribution of government towards the development of the movement.

As Lucius Ellevique, Registrar of Co-operatives, puts it, “the cooperative sector is actually another form of business and it has received quite of a bit of what we can call blessings from Government by way of either direct financing, in some cases, together with concessions and other fiscal incentives.”

“The other objective of the document,” he added, “would be to provide an overview of the cooperative movement and to highlight a number of the key problems and success areas.”

Ellevique said the report would discuss mergers, amalgamations and strategic alliances as the way forward for the cooperative sector. It also will offer an evaluation of the sector using specific standards.

“We are saying that we have some system of bench marking and we want to compare or evaluate the performance of particularly the credit unions vis-à-vis these standards. We also want to examine the trend analysis in terms of the growth trends of the movement,” he pointed out.

The report, expected out in a few months, is aimed at assisting policy makers from outside and within Government, as well as students and researchers seeking information on the cooperative movement on the island.
