St. Lucia may host international cricket as early as May next year during New
Zealand’s tour of the West Indies.
So says, Youth and Sports Minister, Honourable Mario Michel.
He was speaking after a tour of the work in progress on a new
international standard cricket ground for St. Lucia being built in the northern
town of Gros Islet.
The
tour included officials of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) who were in St.
Lucia this week for a series of meetings and to assess the state of readiness of
the new cricket grounds.
Minister
Michel says work on what he expects to be the latest addition to the cricketing
venues in the Caribbean will be completed in March next year, in time for
India’s tour of the West Indies.
However, since the itinerary for the tour will be done long before then, it was
not practical to include St. Lucia as one of the venues for that series, but he
is certain that the island will be on the list of venues for the series against
New Zealand scheduled for May and June 2002.
The new cricket ground is being built at a cost of $27 million dollars and will seat 15,000 persons. |
