St. Lucia To Host Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting |
St. Lucia will host the 2001 Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting later this year. So says Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, who made the announcement Monday.
The meeting will take place September 25th to 27th, with the opening ceremony on September 25th.
During their three-day meeting, the Commonwealth Finance Ministers, many of whom are Heads of Government, are expected to review the world economic situation and prospects, focusing primarily on the adverse impact of the slowdown in global growth on developing countries.
The Finance Ministers are also expected to discuss “conditionalities” attached to programmes of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as matters relating to the debts of highly indebted poor countries.
In addition, other topics are expected to include such issues as attracting finance for development of member countries of the Commonwealth grouping, as well as issues affecting or of interest to small states.
Other issues will most likely include such topics as the proposed Commonwealth Gender Budget initiative, the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC) and the Commonwealth Private Sector Initiative.
Prime Minister Anthony, who will host the meeting as Finance Minister and Minister of Economic Development, has invited his colleagues from throughout the Commonwealth to the conference, which will precede the Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit to take place in Australia soon after. |
