St. Lucia Publishes Biodiversity Country Report |
Wednesday, January 31, 2001 - Through the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, students, researchers and environmentalists wishing to obtain further information on St. Lucia’s biodiversity now have a new avenue for information. This month a 400-page publication documenting the island’s biodiversity is to hit bookstores. The Biodiversity Country Study Report for St. Lucia was funded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and examines in detail St. Lucia’s flora and fauna. Fisheries Biologist Dr. Marie Louis-Felix says the comprehensive report also list recommendations on ways in which threats to the island flora and fauna can be either reduced or eliminated. According to Dr. Louis-Felix, "In the case of our biodiversity country study report, we focused on the social-economic issues, agricultural biodiversity, forest eco-systems, marine and costal eco-systems, fresh water eco-systems and because this industry plays such a major role and impacts on all the various eco-systems, we also have a section on the tourism sector and how it is dependent on the eco-systems and on the flora and fauna of the country." Copies of the document are to be sent to schools across the country where they will serve as reference material. |
