St. Lucia has been invited to be one of the impact countries for a 2002 disaster
preparedness simulation exercise in Honduras. The event slated for the month of
February forms part of an annual regional event involving the Caribbean and
Latin America, organized by the Southern Command of the United States Arm
Forces. Acting
Director of the National Emergency Management Office NEMO Dawn French, just
returning home from Honduras where a series of meetings to plan the activity was
held says during the exercise the emergency operations centre is set up to
provide support to the country that would be the impact country.
“For
the purpose of the simulation in 2002 St. Lucia will be the country hit by a
category five hurricane, which will trigger responses from neighbouring islands
and from CEDERA. Honduras will be the impact country on the landside and will
get support from the surrounding Central American countries,” the NEMO
official said. Accompanying French to the 2002 disaster preparedness simulation in Honduras are the volunteers who have done actual responses during local crises. Whilst St. Lucia has had several of its own simulation exercises, the Honduras experience will be the first of such magnitude for the island. |
