St. Lucia Bureau of Standards Holds Potable Water Quality Seminar |
The
safety and quality of St Lucia's potable water supply, as well as bottled water
sold on the island, are among the issues to be discussed at a seminar being
convened by the St. Lucia Bureau of Standards. The half - day seminar, slated
for August 16th at the NIS conference centre, will bring together key
stakeholders in the water sector to discuss safety and management issues as they
relate to water quality. Dr.
Alison Plummer, Director of the St. Lucia Bureau of Standards says the seminar
is in response to concerns about standards for the quality of the island's
drinking water. Against this background the seminar will not only advise
and update participants on the requirements of the appropriate standards, but
also the mechanisms that are in place to ensure that consumers are provided with
safe, wholesome drinking water. “The presentations at the seminar will be wide ranging and will touch on all aspects of water quality. We have invited various public and private sector agencies including the Ministries of Health and Agriculture. CEHI and WASCO to make presentations on such issues as the draft minimum standards for public water supply, measures for water quality control and the management of watersheds and catchments areas," explains the Bureau's Director.
At
that forum which will be attended by local bottled water producers, the Bureau
will highlight the National Standard developed for bottled water end bottled
water establishments. The development of this standard, is a significant step in
the Bureau's quest to develop and promote standards that will assist the
development of the local food processing sector and ultimately protect the
health and safety of consumers and the environment. The official opening ceremony, which starts at 9 a.m., will be addressed by the Chairman of the Standards Council Tedburt Theobalds, the Chairman of the Water & Sewerage Commission Deborah Bushell, and Minister with responsibility for the Bureau of Standards Honourable Philip J. Pierre will deliver the feature address.
Given
the importance of the subject, the Bureau of Standards invites the general
public to attend the forum in order to seek clarification, share concerns and
generally to provide feedback on the issues being discussed. A special question
and answer segment has been scheduled for 12pm. |
