– Saint Lucia’s Minister of Communications, Works and Public
Utilities, Senator Calixte George, has been re-elected chairman of the Eastern
Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL).
ECTEL was formed by Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia,
Dominica and St. Kitts and Nevis to serve as an independent regulatory body for
the telecommunications industry in participating states.
The
chairmanship of ECTEL is normally for one year but Senator George , a tireless
fighter for the liberalization of telecommunications in the Organization of
Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), was unanimously invited to serve a second
consecutive term by the Ministers responsible for Telecommunications in the OECS
states.
The
OECS Ministers took the view that having Senator George as chairman was
absolutely essential at this stage of ECTEL because of his intimate knowledge of
the technical, economic and international dimensions of the telecommunications
industry, in addition to his negotiating and leadership skills.
The
International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and World Bank have lauded the
efforts of OECS states in liberalizing the telecommunications industry. The
sub-region’s experience is being studied as a guide for telecommunications
liberalization in other parts of the world. |
