Tuesday,
September 4, 2001 --- The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO),
in association with the Saint Lucia Registry of Companies and Intellectual
Property and the Attorney General’s Chambers, is holding a one-day seminar on
patents here on September 10. It’s aimed at increasing awareness in Saint Lucia about the Patent Cooperation Treaty which offers inventors international protection for their inventions through the issue of patents. Saint Lucia has been party to the treaty since 1995. Registrar in the Registry of Companies and Intellectual Property, Kimberly Phulgence, said the Patent Cooperation Treaty is an international agreement which allows for the international filing for the patents. “That basically is for filing an application with the World Intellectual Property Organisation that allows you to designate other countries in which you would want protection,” she explained. “Saint Lucia is a party to that treaty and member states can designate Saint Lucia and obtain protection in Saint Lucia for their inventions.” She added: “We have been party to the treaty since 1995 and applications (for the issue of patents) have started coming in from 1997. We have noted an increase in those applications and so we would like to sensitize persons out there as to what the treaty is about and basically the advantages that filing under the treaty would have for them.” -end- |
