Thursday, August 30, 2001 – Education officials are rejoicing over the achievements of Saint Lucians students at this year’s CXC examinations.   This year’s overall percentage pass rate was 71.2% compared to 67.3% for last year.

Of the seventeen secondary schools on the island sixteen attained above 50% overall pass rates ranging from 49 to 95.6%.  Deputy Registrar of Examinations in the Ministry of

Education, Rufina Frederick, says the results cannot be attributed to any one specific factor.

“The results can be attributed to several factors, parental involvement, student responsibility, the schools’ efforts, that is principals, teachers and continuous training.  So there is no one factor that will contribute to excellent results,” Frederick said.

Frederick said the performance of students may also be attributed in part to several new initiatives within the education system, aimed at stimulating learning in students while enhancing the school environment.

Ministry of Education officials are however disappointed in students’ performance in mathematics and typewriting.  The overall pass rate in mathematics was 42.6% representing an 8.6% decline over last year’s figures. Several programmes have been outlined in an effort to address the situation.  One of the activities includes a series of workshops for teachers from infant to secondary levels aimed at improving the teaching of mathematics.
