Saint Lucia to Host Regional Workshop on Wastewater Management |
Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - Wastewater treatment plant operators throughout the region will meet in Saint Lucia for a special four-day training programme. The November 26-29 training exercise has been organized by the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) and will provide participants with an overview of wastewater treatment, the processes involved, paying particular attention to waste water treatment at hotels and resorts. Director of the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute Mr. Vincent Sweeny says special attention is being paid to the hotels because they are located near to the coastline.
“There has to be concern over the discharge of wastewater generated by these hotels. In some cases it is discharged to a sewerage system. In most cases, it is discharged to a sewerage treatment plant and then out to the marine environment, “ explained Sweeny. “If this is not treated properly it can have damaging impacts on the marine environment as well as on human health. So we want to be sure that the pollution is reduced to a minimum,” he added. The workshop will also be looking at trouble shooting, safety issues, general operation and maintenance and different types of treatment systems. Participants will also be taken on a field trip to treatment plants on the island. Resource persons for that workshop will be provided by CEHI and the Environmental Engineering Division of the Ministry of the Environment in Barbados. |
