Saint Lucia to Host Regional Seminar on Law and the Construction Industry |
Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - Public and private sector officials from five member countries of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) will begin meeting here from November 22, 2001, for a two-day seminar on ‘Law and the Construction Industry.’ The Caribbean Programme For Economic Competitiveness (CPEC) is facilitating the participation of delegates from St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and their Saint Lucian counterparts, in undertaking a review of the Caribbean Development Bank’s Standard Bidding Documents for Procurement of Works.
Vice President of the Saint Lucia Association of Professional Engineers Shanta Kings says it is hoped that the session will provide clarification on the bidding documents, as most times persons encounter difficulty understanding their legal aspects.
According to King, “In Saint Lucia the bidding documents are relatively new having been approved in 1995 and have since been used only on three projects such as the current school building project and the new road development programme. We hope, therefore, that the seminar will educate persons who will be working with and utilizing bidding documents in the future on projects funded by the Caribbean Development Bank.”
Bank officials say they are hoping to get critical feedback from the local experience regarding the use of the documents.
Scheduled for the Bay Gardens Hotel, the seminar is hoping to attract close to fifty (50) engineers, contractors, quantity surveyors, local financiers, lawyers and public sector officials from the OECS. |
