Tuesday, July 10, 2001 St. Lucia is now a full-fledged member of Consumers International. The island was admitted into the global consumers organisation at a recent executive meeting in Malaysia. Director of Consumer Affairs in the Ministry of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and International Financial Services, Phillip McLorren, said membership of Consumers International adds legitimacy to the efforts of his department in championing consumer rights on the island.
In relation to enhancing the image of the Department, this was very clear at the 4th Conference of the Caribbean Consumer Movement which was held in Trinidad and Tobago from June 27-29. At that meeting, St. Lucia really made an impact and currently the island is represented on a Caribbean steering committee to advance the consumer movement in the region, McLorren said. McLorren said the consumer movement in St Lucia was growing from strength to strength. He added that a major awareness campaign involving private and independent groups was taking place. The establishment of a non-governmental organization to oversee consumer rights and protection is also under consideration. |
