Friday, April 20, 2001 – Work On the island’s National Cricket Ground is progressing smoothly and according to plan.   That’s the word coming from Chairman of the National Cricket Ground Committee, Henry Mangal, who was part of a three member delegation that toured the grounds earlier this month.

The team was accompanied by Jim Ryan of Carillion Construction who took members through the construction site, where piling works on the Players Pavilion, the Northern Stands and the Media Centre are nearing completion.    “We were advised that the steel and other prefabricated material are 95% complete and that work on the foundation for the players pavilion and other structures would commence by May 01, 2001.   One of the things which we also need to get organised is the question of preparing the playing area and that is being looked at presently.   Preparation is expected to commence by the 1st May 2001 and we are proposing that the delegation from the West Indies Cricket Board come down to visit the facility so as to satisfy themselves that it would be in order to award Saint Lucia a match for the India Tour scheduled for April 2002,” Mangal said.

In terms of sports and more particularly cricket, Mangal says having an international ground would mean greater exposure for Saint Lucia as this National Cricket Ground is the second cricket specific facility in the Caribbean.   “Whereas you have grounds in other places, they did not start off as being cricket specific and we would have the latest in terms of media centre and so on and in terms of the technology of cricket.  So it would be good for sports, it would also be good for tourism because then you would have teams from England and other places who can tour the Caribbean during their winter months and not necessarily as the Indians but you can have county teams coming down,” Mangal ended.

Meanwhile Minister for Youth and Sports, Honourable Mario Michel is determined to see this project materalise on schedule and has urged contractors and the design team to spare no effort in keeping to the construction schedule.
