- The Ministry of
Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities has gone one step further
in its efforts to improve the island’s road network.
A two-day Origin/Destination Survey targeting motorists along the
Castries to Gros Islet Highway and the Castries to Cul de Sac route has been
carried out.
The first survey
was conducted last week along the Cul de Sac Route and on Thursday the second
survey was done along the Allan Bousquet Highway and the Choc Bay Junction.
The survey is part of a feasibility study for a Castries bypass to
address the problem of traffic congestion to and from the capital city,
Castries.
According
to Traffic Engineer Steve Oliver of DIWI, the international firm supervising the
study, the questions that motorists were asked were really to determine the
origin of travel, destination and purpose of motorists’ journey – whether it is
for business, school or otherwise.
“From the
information we will be able to find out who are the people actually travelling
to and from Castries and beyond Castries and
from that
information we can then derive alternative routes to try and get the congestion
away from the city centre,” says Oliver. Oliver and his team will now focus their attention on analysing the data collected during the survey. |
