Lazaro CabezasMonday, September 10, 2001 – Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Eastern Caribbean and the Bahamas His Excellency Lazaro Cabezas has said goodbye to the Government and people of St. Lucia.   Ambassador Cabezas based in Barbados, says his departure paves the way for a first time resident ambassador to St. Lucia to take up duties with the commissioning here this month of a Cuban Embassy.

The outgoing diplomat has described the relationship between Cuba and CARICOM states as beneficial on both sides. “CARICOM countries including the Eastern Caribbean have supported Cuba against the US imposed blockade. They have also asserted that Cuba has to be a part of the Americas and that all will have to embrace Cuba. That is something that Cuba and the Cuban people appreciate very much and we’re pleased at CARICOM’s support despite the policies of the United States,” said Ambassador Cabezas.

Although battling the over 40 year economic blockade, Cuba continues to lend support to many Caribbean states. In St. Lucia’s case, apart from providing scholarships to scores of St. Lucian students, Cuba continues to assist in the areas of agriculture, sports and health with Ambassador Cabezas promising even more linkages in the near future.

According to him, “We are hoping to increase our ties via trade and business. This is something that we must increase for greater collaboration between Cuba and the Eastern Caribbean.  We’re really hoping to share more and to collaborate more.”
