Monday,
August 27, 2001 -- The Substance Abuse Advisory Secretariat of the
Ministry of Health is mobilizing major religious organisations on the island to
unite for greater effectiveness in the fight against illegal drugs. Drug Control and Prevention Officer Elizabeth Wilson said the Secretariat is holding a meeting with religious organisations on Tuesday, August 28. “We have realized that a big role is played by all religious groups and what we’re trying to do is to get everybody together so that we can have a unified approach to the problem, rather than everybody doing their own little thing,” she explained. The meeting at the Bay Gardens Hotel will examine whether religious organisations have specific policies and programmes for tackling the drug problem. It will also seek to hammer out a year-long programme of activities for joint cooperation between the religious organizations and the Advisory Council Secretariat. Funding and technical assistance also will be discussed. Wilson said the response from the religious organisations has been overwhelming. -ends- |
