The issue of environmental health is becoming of increasing importance to St.
Lucia’s socio-economic development. Food safety practices and water quality
management are key factors in the tourism and agriculture sectors, in
particular. However, these issues are not unique to St. Lucia and so there has
been a move by the Barbados Association of Environmental Health Officers to form
a partnership between that organisation and the Department of Environmental
Health here. Representatives
of the Association arrived on the island last Wednesday for a four-day visit.
Tyrone Applewhite, President of the Association said that Barbados and St. Lucia
faced very similar environmental health challenges such as water quality
management and the prevention of food borne diseases. Mr. Applewhite hopes that
a partnership between the two countries will facilitate an exchange of ideas and
expertise on how to tackle these issues effectively. |
