–The
recently established Police Rapid Response Unit (RRU) in the north of the island
is already reaping great dividends for the tourism industry. Minister
for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Honourable Menissa Rambally, one of the
initiators for the creation of the Unit, explains that since the implementation
of the Rapid Response Unit just under four months ago residents and visitors now
feel a greater sense of safety and security. “Favourable
reports from visitors and hoteliers in the north of the island indicate that the
Rapid Response Unit demonstrates potential in dealing with the issues that
challenge us daily and is effective in ensuring a greater feeling of well being
among visitors and locals. The RRU
is working in collaboration with private security companies in the north of the
island”, the minister said. Ultimately,
the Minister wishes to expand the scope of the RRU into other areas on the
island with high tourist populations. That
expansion in her view would ensure and maintain St. Lucia’s image on the world
scene as a secure tourist destination. In a recent address to the nation on crime, Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony expressed his satisfaction with the work of the unit and signalled his government’s intention to create three additional such units to service the city and the west coast. |
