Public Service Promotes Productivity |
Friday, June 22, 2001 – The Ministry of the Public Service is continuing its campaign to sensitise managers in the public and private sectors about the need for improved productivity in the workplace. The latest initiative is a three-day seminar for senior heads of departments in the Public Service and managers in the private sector. The seminar, which will run from Monday, June 25, to Wednesday, June 27, at the Bay Gardens Hotel, is the fourth in a series of six similar exercises the Ministry of the Public Service is undertaking. According to Senior Training Officer in the Division of Training, Lydia Anselm, the seminar will expose participants to principles of productivity and how they are to be applied to increase efficiency and effectiveness in the work place. “It is also going to indicate, or to at least point out, the role of supervisors in motivating staff towards productivity improvement as well as establish a foundation or an orientation to develop a productivity improvement culture in this nation,” she said. A lack of collaboration between government ministries as well as between the public and private sectors has been identified as one of the factors inhibiting productivity in St. Lucia. Anselm said: “The time has come when we have to accept it is not a realization anymore, that we need to get more results out of the resources that we employ. We do not have a choice in the matter anymore. Globalisation and all types of other things make it mandatory for us to do things better.” The Barbados National Productivity Council is facilitating next week’s seminar. The series will culminate in August with a national consultation, bringing together all participants. This consultation is expected to serve as a springboard for future productivity improvement seminars. |
