Public Servants to become Kweyol Literate |
Contact: Ayodele Hippolyte Wednesday, March 14, 2001 - Kweyol may be the unofficial national language of St. Lucia but it is gradually entering the official realm thanks to a bold initiative on the part of the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports. A special Kweyol literacy programme will soon expose public servants to the reading and writing of Kweyol. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Didacus Jules, explains that the programme is intended to enhance the capabilities of public servants with the language, particularly those who deal extensively with the general public. Earlier this week, several short sample classes were held at the ministry "to sensitise the staff to the methodology and the content of the programme". The staff of the Ministry of Education will be the first to participate in the course after which it will be extended to other ministries who express an interest. So far, 95 persons have registered for the three-month programme, which should begin shortly. The programme is being organised through the National Enrichment and Learning Programme, formerly the Adult Education Unit, in collaboration with the Folk Research Centre and the publishing house An Ché Nou, which is owned by the tutor of the course, Mr. Michael Walker. Mr. Walker is a world expert in the teaching of a second language and author of over 500 books on the subject. He has also worked assiduously in the promotion of Kweyol literacy in St. Lucia. |
