Monday, September 24, 2001 - Officials of the Ministry of Communications and Works are continuing their public discussions with a cross section of Saint Lucians for the road development Project for the north of the island.

The most recent Town Hall meeting was with persons who live and work between the Vigie Junction and the Choc Area.

Minister for Communications and Works, Senator Calixte George says the meetings have been so designed to ensure discussion and feedback from all persons who will be affected by the development works.

“I want to assure you that this is certainly a participatory exercise and there are no firm decisions made on what we are about to embark.  The improvement can take place in several ways and now as far as this is concerned there are certain proposals by other participants in the economic sector particularly the JQ Charles group who had in fact had a similar kind of concept in terms of the Choc/Babonneau intersection because of proposed development around that area.  We were able to cooperate, and integrate some of the elements of that particular development in the concept for this particular proposal,” the Minister explained.

Mr. George said that the road development project has taken on greater significance as there needs to be a better flow of traffic particularly from the city centre to the north of the island.

“If we do not pursue such development paths now we will be obviously in a lot of trouble down the road so it is really a matter of forward planning.   Obviously change does not suit everybody.  The change obviously is needed but there will be stakeholders in the process of change who would be affected.  There are those who will get direct benefits however I believe that in the process for change the overall benefits to the economy and to the people of Saint Lucia is what we need to have in our minds,” the minister told the meeting.
