PM to Attend Specially Convened Bahamas Caricom Summit |
October 5, 2001
- Prime Minister Dr. Kenny D. Anthony will travel to the Bahamas next week, to
attend a specially convened meeting of Heads of Government of the Caribbean
Community (Caricom). The meeting,
which will be hosted by Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, will consider,
among other things, the impact of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre
and the consequences for the economies of the Commonwealth Caribbean. The Bahamas summit is expected
to focus particularly on the tourism sector, which has suffered a major downturn
throughout the Caribbean. It is expected that regional
tourism officials and stakeholders will also join the Reads of Government for
the meeting. According to Prime Minister Anthony, "the meeting is both necessary and timely, as the entire region now faces an economic crisis unparalleled in recent times." The Prime Minister believes that despite the difficulties that confront the region, and the OECS particularly, the region needs to take bold decisions to restructure not only domestic but also the regional economy. |
