PM Regrets Temporary Closure of Club Med |
October 31,
2001 - Prime Minister Dr. Kenny D. Anthony says the delayed reopening of the
Club Med hotel in Vieux Fort is "a great blow to residents of the south of the
island, particularly those of Vieux Fort."
Before
the September 11 terrorist attack Club Med had undertaken substantial renovation
and refurbishment of the hotel in time for the approaching winter season. The
terrorist attack has now changed all of that.
The Prime
Minister has also expressed his concern about the temporary loss of jobs that
will result and says he is "disappointed" at the development. "I know and
understand how distressing this can be for the people of the South, especially
my constituents, as many are employed at the hotel," says the Prime Minister,
who is also the Parliamentary Representative for Vieux Fort South.
The Government
has noted that the decision not to reopen the hotel for this winter also affects
17 other properties owned by the hotel worldwide, including two other hotels in
the Caribbean.
Dr.
Anthony says he shares the view of President General of the National Workers
Union (NWU), Mr. Tyrone Maynard, that while it is regrettable that the hotel had
to close, the relationship with the hotel's owners and management has been good.
The Prime
Minister says he is aware that the hotel is making special arrangements for its
employees, as it wishes to retain them for its reopening in the future.
Dr.
Anthony says he hopes to meet with the President General of the NWU, which
represents the workers, 'to discuss the situation and plan for the months
ahead." |
