Director of the Folk Research Centre, Kennedy “Boots” Samuel has spoken
quite favourably on the efforts by a number of groups and organizations that
have expressed interest in participating in this year’s Kweyol Heritage Month,
which culminates on October 28th, International Kweyol Day, or as it
is referred to in the kweyol speaking Caribbean islands, Jounen Kweyol. Four
main communities will be hosting activities for Kweyol Heritage Month namely,
Monchy, Canaries, Chosieul and Desruisseaux. According to Mr. Samuel, a number
of small communities and organizations that had never been involved in the
celebration before have expressed their willingness to participate this year.
Among the new comers will be Government House. “As
you know, they have established a museum called Le Pavilion Royale, and our
esteemed Governor General, who has been very close to the ordinary folk, is
planning a Creole Garden Party at Government House on October 21st as
part of Creole Heritage Month,” Samuel said. The Jounen Kweyol committee from each of the four communities have developed a programme of activities for the month. Those activities were discussed at a general meeting held recently at the Folk Research Centre. |
