Paying the Right Price for School Books |

The
Consumer Affairs Division of the Ministry of Commerce, International Financial
Services and Consumer Affairs is at present surveying and monitoring the pricing
of school supplies including text books, exercise and note books to ensure that
all traders comply with the Distribution and Price Goods Act No. 23 of 1967 and
Statutory Instrument No. 27 of 1999. According
to Director of the Division, Phillip Mc Lauren, this is necessary at this time
as parents are now purchasing books for the new school year.
“We find that this is an opportune time to inform them (of the
provisions of the Act) in respect of text books because this is the peak season
where parents go out to purchase school texts for their children,” Mc Lauren
said. Inspectors
attached with the Consumer Affairs Division are now involved in a field survey
at all bookstores across the island to ensure that traders comply with the rules
and regulations stipulated in the Act. Due to Government’s intervention the publishers’ price of school textbooks were reduced by almost 30%. This should be reflected in the maximum price fixed for this year’s school supplies.
