Wednesday, January 10, 2001 - Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony has issued a stern warning to criminal elements on the island, who he says are bent on terrorizing the community, and in particular the tourism sector.

In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, Dr. Anthony indicated that his administration would not tolerate attempts to drag the country into what he termed a state of lawlessness.

“We cannot and will not allow law abiding citizens to live in constant fear of a few unruly individuals, some of whom refuse to engage in honest pursuits to earn a living. The police have been given special instructions to intensify patrols particularly in known trouble spots. The police presence on the streets will be felt as never before and I have directed the Police Commissioner to cancel leave to aid this island wide effort. Criminals will not be allowed to create a climate of fear and uncertainty. This lawlessness must stop.  Those who refuse will face the full consequences,” said Dr. Anthony.

These measures he indicated, will come into effect immediately and will complement other measures being taken by government, in its holistic approach to law enforcement, and legal and penal reform.

The measures include a national anti-crime commission, the revision of the criminal code, the establishment of a new Evidence Act, improvements in the court system, stiffer penalties for drugs and gun related crimes, construction of a modern correctional facility and the setting up of a new rapid response unit attached to the Gros - Islet Police station.

Society for its part, Dr. Anthony noted, needed to send a clear message to criminals that it was willing to cooperate with the police in reducing tolerance to crime.
